Why we built KeepBasis

Welcome to KeepBasis. We launched in July 2026 with one mission: to keep homeowners from paying unnecessary capital gains tax when they sell.

KeepBasis was born out of a personal problem. After finishing a large renovation in 2021, we kept a poorly organized spreadsheet of everything we had done — with no idea whether those items would qualify as capital improvements later on. To be honest, we didn't know what the allowable exclusion was either, or whether we needed to track our improvements at all.

Keeping the invoices and documentation was a challenge too, particularly since we have no idea whether we'll sell our house in a few years or a few decades.

That's why KeepBasis was founded with two core tenets in mind: security and longevity. We store your information securely, and we only charge you once for it.
